Stump Removal & Grinding FAQs

What is the difference between stump removal and stump grinding?

Stump removal involves pulling the entire root ball out (often disruptive to the yard), while grinding uses a machine to chew the stump into small chips below the soil surface.

How deep do you grind the stumps?

We typically grind 6 to 12 inches below the surface, which is deep enough to allow for topsoil and grass seed to be planted over the area.

What happens to the wood chips after grinding?

The grinding process creates a mix of wood chips and soil. This can be used as mulch, or we can haul it away.

Can I plant a new tree where a stump was ground?

It’s best to plant a few feet away from the old spot to avoid the old root mass. If you must plant in the same spot, we recommend additional soil preparation.

Will stump grinding kill the roots?

For most species, yes. However, some tree roots may sprout small shoots. We can advise if a chemical treatment is needed for specific types of trees.
